My education at King University has prepared me to be competent in nursing administration by showing me how to be a leader in my acedemic life, my professional life, and my personal life. King's core values of Christian failth, scholarship, service, and career have been the foundation of my education, and I plan to continue to live these values professionally. As I continue to live these values I have no doubt I will experience success, achievement, and cultural transformation.

Coats for Kids for Visionary Leadership in Nursing 2014 (presentation)

I crocheted 35 hats to be given away at King's Coats for Kids. I used yarn I already had on hand and yarn that friends donated. I even had friends give me money to buy yarn. I then volunteered my time that day helping kids pick out a hat to match their coat. Scripture inspiration for this project included:

  • Luke 6:31: Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.

  • Galatians 6:9: Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

  • Hebrews 13:1-2: Let love of the brethren continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.

Of the ten characteristics of servant leadership, I feel that four of them were particularly applicable to this project: 1) Awareness of community need overall, 2) Empathy for individuals in need, 3) Stewardship of talent, and 4) Building Community in helping those in need. I was really shocked of the needs of our community. When I drove up to the gym, people were already lined up outside. As a mother myself, I cannot comprehend the fear, worry and embarrassment I would feel if I was unable to purchase a coat for my child. I witnessed the pure joy of the children because they were getting something new to them. I used the stewardship of my ablility to crochet. It was overwhelming, having a sudden feeling of fellowship with the other volunteers and seeing how the community came together and helped these families in need.
