This competency was met mainly in Visionary Leadership in Nursing (NURS 5050), as you can see from the assignments below. I interviewed a nurse executive who had a leadership style and leadership skills I myself wanted to emanate. Individulaism is a strength of mine, and because of this I enjoyed observing and analyzing the leadership team meeting. Working in pharmaceutical sales at the time when I took this course, I could relate to transactional leadership and chose to complete my paper and video presentation about it. For Transformational Strategies I (5058), I studied the organizational theory by Fred Fiedler: Contingency Theory. This gave me greater insight into organizational and systems leadership.
Communication is essential to effective leadership, and that is why I focused on Imogene King's Theory of Goal Attainment in Theoretical Basis of Nursing Practice (NURS 5000). I am stronger in reflective thinking, but by nature I avoid conflict. So conflict resolution is an area I recognize that I need to improve in. Otherwise, I am confident that I am able to communicate, collaborate, negotiate, delegate and coordinate in order to lead and maintain effective working relationships.
Visionary Leadership was a course in my first semester at King University. I have a link to my Reflective Paper below which really summarizes my experience. I feel like I met this AACN competency upon the completion of this course, but it is important to note that I continued to use these leadership skills throughout my graduate education. I will strive to improve my leadership skills and be open to other's leadership styles wherever and whenever I can.
