Background for Practice from Sciences and Humanities/ Scientific Foundation

Integrates scientific findings from nursing, humanities, biopsychosocial fields, genetics, public health, quality improvement, health economics, translational science and organizational sciences for the continual improvement of nursing care. Knowledge from information sciences, health communication and health literacy are used to provide care management and coordination to multiple populations. Critically analyzes data and evidence for improving advanced nursing practice.

My background for practice was developed initially in my undergraduate studies at East Tennessee State University. Nineteen years of nursing experience also translates into a practical background for practice as I advance into the role of a master's prepared nurse. Although I have integrated scientific findings from various fields of study throughout my graduate education, this competency was met primarily in Research Designs in Nursing (NURS 5001), Social, Cultural & Political Perspectives on Healthcare & Delivery Systems (NURS 5010), and through my Strategic Project: Improving Access to Oncology Care for Transformational Strategies (NURS 5058, 5059, 5060).

In Research Designs I evaluated published research studies for application to evidence-based nursing practice with the goal of continuing improvement of nursing care. I chose a qualitative study to critique. I completed three annotated bibliographies, pulling all the research together for my final research paper, Hospital Discharges: Nurse and Patient Perceptions of the Discharge Process. A presentation was given to my peers at the end of the semester as well.

Evidenced based care is essential in providing exceptional care management, and it is the only way to improve advanced nursing practice. Health communication and literacy was demonstrated through vairous projects in Social, Cultural, and Political Perspectives on Healthcare & Delivery Systems, specifically the infographic. I am very interested in population health and disease management, therefore I feel like this interest and desire to learn and critically analyze data is a strength. In my practicum for Transformational Strategies, I critiqued published literature in nursing administration and related disciplines for application of evidence-based knowledge in the nurse executive role. Below are my papers and presentations for Transformational Strategies.
