Informatics and Healthcare Technologies/ Information Literacy

Uses patient-care technologies to deliver and enhance care. Uses communication technologies to integrate and coordinate care. Data management to analyze and improve outcomes of care. Health information management for evidence-based care and health education. Facilitates the use of electronic health records. Ethically manages data, information, knowledge and technology to communicate effectively with the healthcare team, patients and caregivers. Demonstrates information literacy skills in complex decision making. Uses technology systems that capture data on variables for the evaluation of nursing care.

Although there is always room for personal and professional improvement and learning, I felt very confident with

informatics and health technologies even before taking Healthcare Informatics (NURS 5014), as was shown by the P.A.T.C.H. Assessment. This competency was solidified after taking this course.

During this course I designed this E-portfolio (which I have since redesigned two more times). I learned to evaluate web sites. Through assigned readings, discussion board posts and quizzes, I grew in my knowledge of patient-care technologies used to deliver and enhance care. I discovered new communication technologies such as PowToon, an alternative to PowerPoint. I became familiar with Screencast-O-Matic and other platforms that can be used for health education.

Our final health information technologies (HIT) project was a group project we completed by designing a web site to communicate area COPD Resources. Throughout my studies, I continued to use the platforms I discovered in Healthcare Informatics. I even discovered new ones like Bubbl.us where I drew a concept map of a revenue cycle for Financial/Accounting Issues for Nurse Managers (NURS 5054) and Piktochart to create an infographic about Harm Reduction for Social, Cultural & Polical Perspectives on Healthcare & Delivery Systems (NURS 5010). Computer technologies has always been a strength of mine, as I have taught myself many software programs. I also worked a travel nurse assignment in 2007 at Stanford's Lucille Packard's Children's Hospital when they implemented EPIC. My only weakness may be that I have my favorite applications, and tend to use those instead of learning or even exploring new ones.
