This competency was met through several courses I completed at King University. Not only through the obvious course Social, Cultural & Political Perspectives on Healthcare & Delivery Systems (NURS 5010) and assignments that promote health and reduce risk of or prevents disease like Undertreatment of AFIB, Harm Reduction, and Health Plan Case Study, but also assignments in Transformational Strategies (NURS 5058, 5059, 5060) such as my Organizational Assessment and Strategic Project at Wellmont Cancer Institute (WCI).

     WCI is part of Wellmont Medical Associates whose focus is on access, preventive health and wellness, population health management, and vulnerable populations. My strategic project at WCI allowed me to integrate broad, organizational, client-centered and cuturally appropriate concepts of evidence-based care. My intense interest in this area of nursing (population health) is a strength. A barrier or weakness is that there is so much to learn and healthcare is changing at such a rapid pace due to healthcare reform that it is hard to keep up. My goal in practice is to design and deliver clinical prevention interventions and population based care that promote health and reduce risk of disease.
